Spotlight On A Local Business - Cafe Amri At Oxnards The Palms

We placed some of the highlights from their website below...

First-time customers might consider the newly opened Cafe Amri at The Palms in Oxnard a bit difficult to locate. Sure, it’s in what was intended to be Ventura County’s first outlet mall. But new buildings have since sprung up at Outlet Center Drive where it meets Gonzales Road, partially obscuring the entrance.

Still, finding the breakfast-and-lunch spot is worth the effort, as we — and a convivial bunch of fellow patrons — discovered one recent morning.
Located next to Luna’s Mexican Tradition in what used to be Asia Fuzsion Grill, Cafe Amri is the brainchild of Ray Chaparro, who named it after his daughter, Amri, and wife, Irma.
The handsome dining room features chairs with decorative metal backs, very comfortable booths and a pair of pillars bracing a wall that separates customers from a view of the kitchen. Green plants add flourishing accents.Amri’s breakfast menu is traditional, albeit with a few Latin accents. We chose a pumpkin-walnut waffle ($6.45) and the French toast combo ($7.95). Add a bountiful bowl of fresh fruit ($4.50) as a starter, and we had a perfect-size midmorning meal. The waffle was light and crisp and had a pleasantly spiced flavor that was enhanced by the crunch of walnuts. With it I ordered sausage patties ($3.95), which offered lively flavor but were of a consistency that didn’t yield readily to a fork. The two slices of French toast were par for the course, and I liked the thin, crisp bacon that came with them.

Among “the classics” available for breakfast are a rib-eye steak and eggs, pork chops, hot links or corned beef hash with eggs, huevos rancheros, chorizo con huevos and eggs Benedict. Also available are a breakfast burrito, a southern-fried chicken and waffle combo, and a good selection of omelets and pancakes, the latter plain and flavored. Joining the list of breakfast items are the Amri’s Special (machaca), buttered grits and oatmeal, homemade biscuits and gravy, and cinnamon rolls. The rolls appear to have been inspired by those served at the late Uncle Herb’s Restaurant & Pancake House in Oxnard, where chef Jesse Tuando once worked. We inquired whether they and the desserts listed on the menu were made in-house. We were assured they were. Our first choice for a take-home dessert, apple pie, was not available that day, so we instead ordered the Oreo cookie pie. It was sinfully rich.At lunchtime, the cafe breaks out with burgers, albacore tuna melts, French dips, tri-tip, pulled pork, hot pastrami and Reuben sandwiches, along with salads and wraps. Service was friendly and swift and the staff adds to the general good nature of the cafe. All you have to do is find it.

This was an accidental find but, I know Cafe Amri will become a restaurant I will frequent. Who knew that one of my favorite meals, chicken and waffles could be found so close to home and done perfectly!

Catering to our office was yummy today! Eggs, bacon, sausage, croissants, assorted bagels, cream cheese, and beautiful fresh fruit platters. We will probably try them for lunch next time!
